London Social Media Week

9 Feb

Ian Kearney

It’s Social Media Week (SMW) this week and nine cities across four continents are hosting a range of events letting the world know that social media is big, bold and here to stay.

The aim?

To bring “hundreds of thousands of people together every year through learning experiences that aim to advance our understanding of social media’s role in society”.

Social Media Week

It started in New York City in 2009, with over 2,500 people attending 40 events and thousands more participating online.

In 2010, the event went global. SMW expanded from one to six cities, returning to the Big Apple and touching down in London, Berlin, San Francisco, Toronto and São Paulo.

These transcontinental conventions attracted more than 7,500 attendees across 200 events and such was the success that in September 2010, they made the conference biannual, adding to the list; Los Angeles, Milan, Bogotá, Mexico City, and Buenos Aires.

This week conferences are being hosted in London, Paris, New York, San Francisco, Toronto, São Paolo, Paris, Rome and Hong Kong.

Looking at the lineup for this week’s conferences in London I was a little surprised that from what I could see there was only two events directly linking social media and journalism. This was a stark contrast to the 40 events on the topic that are taking place during this week’s SMW New York.

If New York is the epicenter of SMW are journalism and social media more interlinked and are we, in London, merely playing catch up?

I tweeted Social Media week London to if we could find out why social media and journalism weren’t hot topics in London.

So there you have it, Social Media Week London want to know if we want to run an event for them next year somewhere in the area of social media and journalism. A great honour indeed.

So if we were to host an event what would you, our loyal followers, like to see us cover?

All suggestions are welcome.
